In other words, they learn to delay gratification, which is a valuable life lesson.  Pocket money can also be linked to certain significant chores around the house and that's important because children can learn something about the value of work.  Not all chores, however, should have financial incentives attached to them otherwise children will learn that you only tidy your room etc. when you are offered money to do it.  Pocket money is part of how we learn about money, saving and spending and sometimes needs a little thought.
