Radio Solent Interview

August 2013

I was interviewed on BBC Radio Solent about the psychology of youth subcultures and the ways in which they allow their followers to both rebel (against their parents and mainstream culture) and conform at the same time, as Quentin Crisp had noted in 'The Naked Civil Servant'.  We discussed what specifically subcultures contribute to our social identity and why negotiating these identities are particularly important for those marginalised by mainstream society.  The rather surprising pull of the subculture across the whole life span was also touched upon.
